SOUL AND GROOVY JAZZ

Laurent Doumont (Vocals & saxes), Vincent Bruyninckx (piano), Lorenzo Di Maio (guitar), Sam Gerstmans (bass), Adrien Verderame (drums)

Laurent Doumont has been taking his grooves out to clubs and festivals on the streets of Brussels and abroad for more than 20 years, trying to bring color to Belgium’s grey. Recently, an introspective quest of his Sicilian descent gave birth to the « Americano » project. Twelve great Italian standards joyfully adapted in the Soul Jazz idiom he cares for. A very personal project indeed. Try to imagine Celentano, Modugno or Paolo Conte covered in the manner of Marvin Gaye, Al Green or Serge Gainsbourg… If you close your eyes, you can almost hear the waves on the beaches of Capri.

ANA & THE DUORKESTRA, MULTI-INSTRUMENTAL FOLK-JAZZ

CARTE BLANCHE TO THIBAULT DILLE

Thibault Dille (A lot of different instruments), Pierre Gillet (so much instruments), Ana Rocha (Voice)

A guitarist, an accordionist and a singer. They’ve met many centuries ago and grew up together. They’ve played together. Been on tour together. They have an interest for Jazz, Portuguese music and Brazilian music, but first and foremost, they have their own sound. They frequented the Royal Conservatory, in Brussels, on several occasions and different space and time continuums. One of them is German and Portuguese. Another is Belgian. One of them is good with numbers, the other good with words, the third obsessed with music. Maybe they are all obsessed with music. They've met in Brussels, renowned multi - cultural city with some successful and less successful stories of people coming to live there together to embrace the "belgitude ", the languages, the latent conflict of interests, the international atmosphere, to embrace all things known and foreign at the same time, colliding in the city. And then, there was the right moment and opportunity. The three musicians met in Brussels and decided that from that moment on, they would be making music, together. It will be good, it will be loud and it will be their own.

FESTIVAL COURANT D’AIR

15th EDITION

The Courants d’airs festival is organized by the Conservatoire in collaboration with the Centre des Arts scéniques. It acts as a real stepping stone towards professional life, allowing students and new graduates to develop their own innovative shows, and giving space to a new generation of artists. Courants d'airs brings together original projects, collective creations and many students' pluridisciplinary associations of Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles and other schools of arts of the Federation Wallonie-Brussels: IAD, Arts², ARbA-EsA, l'INSAS, La Cambre, KCB and ISAC. The Courants d’airs festival takes place in downtown Brussels over a five-day period in April of each year. 300 young artists and 50 creations were presented during the 2019 edition. A very diverse  audience is invited once again to discover tomorrow's great artists: professionals, regular spectators and news onlookers...

For this new collaboration with the festival, four musical projects are presented on our stage!

RED COUCH (50 MIN)

Degueldre Sébastien (Double bass, Composition), Cailleau Sebastian (Guitar, vocals, Composition), Balmelle Barnabé (Drums), Jim Nora (Piano, vocals, Composition)

Red Couch came to life over the summer around the compositions of Nora Jim – Piano, vocals -, Sebastian Cailleau – guitar, vocals – and Sebastian Degueldre – double bass. After a few concerts, Barnabé Balmelle (drums) joined the band bringing a whole other dynamic to their songs.

The music they play is mostly jazzy, in the sense that it is based on improvisation and interaction. This being said, their repertoire mixes various styles : pop, jazz, classical music and rock. Each song thus has its own vibe and reflects the personal and artistic vision of the artists.

NOVECENTO (50 MIN)

Violette Schloesing (vocals), Emmanuel Debaty (piano)

Mélody, jazz singer met pianist Danny Boodmann T.D. Novecento on a boat cruise to New-York for which they got hired to play and entertain the passengers. A great friendship  immediatly, reflecting their shared love for jazz music.

But Novecento, on top of being a jazzman, pianist and composer constantly creating and experiencing with his instrument, took the habit of listening to the passengers' music and incorporate some of these foreign vibes into his own music.

Born on that boat he never really came off. How is that encounter going to influence those two people's lives and to what extent will it resonate through their music? Embark on their musical journey to have the answer.

BELLE ÉPOQUE (50 MIN)

Brassart Damien (Saxophoniste), Maes Antoine (Contrebassiste), Verwilghen Romain (Guitariste/chanteur)

Belle Époque is a trio (soprano sax, guitar, double bass) that interprets jazz standards from the 1920 – 1940.

The end of the first World War was a period of feast, joy, life, experimentations, dance and swing ! Belle Epoque interprets tunes and standards from that era, made famous by artists such as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington... to name but few.

This trio pays tribute to this music that praised love, joy but also... anger and sadness – in other words, life, yet still celebrating the miracle it is in the end, regardless of the obstacles. Let's enjoy the moment and embrace it, that's what Belle Epoque is all about !

CARTE BLANCHE TO THIBAULT DILLE

Diederik Wissels (Piano), Thibault Dille (Accordion, accordina), Nicolas Kummert (Saxophone), Victor Foulon (Double bass)

Pasarela explores the mysteries of atmospheric themes resonating with melancholy. Subtle piano notes reveal an introspective universe shared by those two musicians. The lyricism of Thibault Dille's accordion joins Nicolas Kummert's vibrant sax notes in rainbow like chords and melodies, with some darker Scandinavian vibes. The whole thing, enhanced by Victor Foulon's round and soft double bass sound.

TRIBUTE TO BILL WITHERS

BRINGIN' BACK THE GROOVE...

On Oct. 6, 1972, Bill Withers headlined Carnegie Hall and recorded the concert for a live album that’s now a time capsule of 1970s soul. The hand-played music on “Live at Carnegie Hall” reaches into funk, pop, folk, jazz and the fringes of gospel; the songs are kindly, hardheaded, romantic, socially conscious and perfectly plain-spoken. Mr. Withers captured the passions and dignity of everyday life in songs like “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Use Me” and “Lean on Me”; compassion and empathy shine through. Nathan Ambach also known as N8N ((N-Eight-N)) is a RnB and soul singer. Son of famous Paul Ambach ( Boogie Boy), Nathan was in contact with music from an early age on and found a real passion for artists such as Ray Charles , Bill Withers , James Brown and BBKing.
