CARTE BLANCHE TOGUILLAUME GILLAIN

Guillaume Gillain started playing guitar at the age of eight.

His first guitar teacher, Alain Pierre, introduced him to jazz and advised him to continue learning in summer workshops. After that day, Guillaume studied jazz in various places to finally enter the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels. There, he had the opportunity to study with great musicians such as Fabien Degryse, Victor Da Costa, Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, Phil Abraham and so on. He also got to meet Maxime Moyaerts, another student who shared

the same love for jazz. Together, they created a band called « Four of a Kind ». They are inspired by the old swing of Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Kenny Burrel, Barney Kessel but also new musicians like Aaron Goldberg, Peter Bernstein and Christian Mc Bride.

The band won different contests giving them the chance to play in many festivals such as Gouvy Jazz, Comblain-la-Tour Jazz, Jazz au Brouckay and even on the Grand Place of Brussels for the Brussels Marathon.

After earning his Bachelor degree, Guillaume decided to attend the flemish section of the Conservatoire to continue his learning with Peter Hertmans, Jeroen Van Herzeel, Kris Drefoort. He graduated with a Master degree in 2016.

Today Guillaume plays in many different bands such as « Pauline Leblond Double Quartet »,

« Mi P’tit Duo », « Guillaume Gillain’s Organ Trio » and « Four of a Kind ». He is also taking part of a big collective of swing musicians in Brussels that propose different formations (« Morning Call », « New-Orleans collectif », « La Fanfare Formidable » …) Now, Guillaume has started learning vocal jazz at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels with the great Pete Chruchill as teacher and he is used to singing a lot in all his concerts.

HETTY KATE QUARTET

TRIBUTE TO THE VOCALISTS FROM THE 40S AND 50S

Hetty Kate (vocals), Maxime Moyaerts (piano), Alex Gilson (bass), Armando Luongo (drums)

Australian jazz vocalist Hetty Kate is often lauded for her ‘natural musicality’, unadorned vocal style, pure tone and impeccable timing, a quality that draws in audiences and musicians alike. A singer that loves the music, and loves to swing, without being trapped in the past.

With a career that has taken her across the globe, from New Zealand to New York, Hetty has made her mark on both the Australian and international jazz scenes, being described as “the real deal” and “one of the best swing singers on the current scene” (Will Friedwald, author and jazz critic, 2017).

Born in England, raised in Australia and now living in Paris, Hetty has released nine albums, appeared as a guest on many others, and toured internationally for over a decade. Festival appearances include the New York Winter Jazz Festival (USA), Sapporo International Jazz Festival (Japan), Melbourne International Jazz Festival (Australia) and many more across Europe, Australia and Asia. Hetty sang with Australian Jazz Legend James Morrison's bands for five years and was the featured vocalist for his symphonic concert 'The A to Z of Jazz' which toured with nine symphonies internationally, including the Czech National Symphonic Orchestra for the Prague Proms.

Hetty has a classic, clear sound reminiscent of the vocalists from the 1940s and 50s, and is sometimes compared to a young Peggy Lee or Doris Day. Known for her pure tone, diction, faultless rhythm and swing, as well a fun and effortless ease on stage, Hetty is sure to delight you with a charming collection of songs from her album releases, and some new favourites.

"A stage presence only matched by the clarity of her voice" James Morrison, AU

"Hetty Kate's voice overflows with a natural musicality" Richard Fields 3CR Radio, AU

"A charismatic and technically gifted vocalist" Chris May, All About Jazz, USA

SONGS OF OLD

POP JAZZ

Emily Allison (vocals), Florent Jeuniaux (guitar), Nicolas Kummert (tenor sax), Dorian Dumont (piano/keys) Boris Schmidt (bass), Jelle Van Giel (drums)

‘Songs of Old' introduces a quirky cast of fugitives from folk tales, nursery rhymes and nonsense verse, almost all children of the imagination of writers with a subtle, very British blend of whimsy and poetry.

Brought to you by the Franco-British jazz singer Emily Allison, this extraordinary album transports the listener to an imaginary world where everything and anything is possible. After working alongside famous names on the international jazz scene (duo with David Linx on LIFT's album 'First Floor', guest vocalist on Diederik Wissels' 'Pasarela') Emily now leads her own group.

This hybrid formation of classical and jazz instruments both supports and draws inspiration from the storyteller/vocalist, who in turn feeds off the energy the musicians provide. Despite its harmonic com- plexity, technical virtuosity and refusal to compromise on melody, the music never for a moment loses sight of the underlying playfulness of the lyrics. For the listener, the experience is inspiring, sometimes unsettling, but ultimately reassuring; we cannot fail to be moved by the timevless folk wisdom of the lyrics.

HERVE CAPARROS TRIBUTE TO BENSON

TRIBUTE TO GEORGE BENSON

Hervé Caparros (guitar, vocals), Wajdi Riahi (piano), Sal La Rocca (bass), Noam Israeli (drums)

George Benson has always been one of my favourite guitarists. His phrasing close to singing and his technical brilliance instantly placed him among the greats of the 20th century. From his masters, Wes Montgomery and Grant Green, he has retained “drive”, impeccable articulation and a faultless sense of groove. He remains a supreme reference to jazz guitarists due to his melodic and harmonic inventiveness, as well as his rhythmic signature.

This tribute proposes to honor two great periods of his career, as a smooth jazz guitarist in the 80s and as a swing guitarist in the 60s, by (re)discovering his repertoire and his classics, given a new take by 4 hotshots of the Belgian scene.

ALEPH QUINTET

MIX OF JAZZ, MAGHREB AND MIDDLE EAST MUSICS

Akram Ben Romdhane (Oud), Marvin Burlas (violin), Théo Zipper (bass), Wajdi Riahi (piano), Max Aznar (drums)

Aleph Quintet is a music group based in Brussels, Belgium. It is without borders that North African music mixes with Jazz improvisation, Gnawa rhythms and Sufi culture. The group is a heterogeneous mix of nationalities and origins. Their communicative energy mixed with a great sense of collective allows them to transmit this passion directly to the audience.

The singularity of the band is characterized by the meeting of modern jazz (piano, electric bass, drums) and the alliance of the sounds of the oud and the violin, close to the traditional music of the Maghreb and the Middle East.

NEW ORLEANS NIGHT OWLS

Dirk Van Der Linden (piano), Peter Verhas (reeds), Stef Willems (bass), Peter Hermann (drums),

Joris De Cock (trumpet)

Founded 07/05/1989 by Joris De Cock with a heart for New Orleans Revival jazz! In this band no sophisticated well-rehearsed fixed solo’s and arrangements as Dixieland-bands practicing. NO-music is basically “a simple melody with a beat” played the spontaneous charming way to entertain the audience. “Music for All Occasions!” was functional. Next to Classic songs a lot of popular songs came to the scene. “C’est si bon” and “La Vie en Rose” picked up in Belgium by Louis Armstrong, was not appreciated by real Jazz fanatics. More popular hits from film and Broadway-productions requested by audiences came in the repertoire from NO-bands. This explains why beside traditional-jazz tunes NONO’s program is inspired by artists as Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew, Louis Prima, Dr. John, “Fess” Longhair, Ray Charles and some Blues giants... and yes! They are all connected to the Crescent City!

He is a talented writer, composer and performer, but also a multi-instrumentalist, director and producer. Cool School [The Music of Michael Franks] is his fifth studio album. The result is astonishing; his voice very close to that of Michael Franks and his unique ambiances that rocked our 70/80s with happiness. Between jazz, bossa nova, pop folk sophisticated, we enjoy listening to his standards of Michael Franks rearranged by Leo Sidran. A great success.

STRING TRIO

CARTE BLANCHE TO ANDREW BOLTON

Andrew Bolton (bass, vocals), Guillaume Gillain (guitar, vocals), Alexandre Tripodi (violin)

Andrew Bolton and Guillaume Gillain are two lead singers who are now inseparable.

Both comping & singing in The Morning Call Jazz Band, they also play in duet, and share thier passion for jazz standards. For the occasion they invited the virtuous violin player Alexandre Tripodi to embellish and explore a sweet & dynamic set of strings.

With a guitar, an upright bass, their two voices, and a violin they give a nice and powerful set recisiting jazz standards from early to modern pieces and also their own compositions too.

Among the blend of their voices, they are also great soloists, their strings fit together perfectly and their rage of keeping the drive of swing makes them a very tight rhytmic section.

Come listen how those rocky fellows share their passion with an astonishing live trio.

“Champian is the most gifted pure jazz singer of her generation”

                                                                                        - DETROIT FREE PRESS

“If Blossom Dearie and Duke Ellington had a love child, it could well have been Fulton. Her vocal tone is reminiscent of the former—light and girlish—but with more heft; her attack on the keys is intelligently percussive: energetic and determined, yet without a hint of heaviness.”

                                                                                                                     - The NYC Jazz Record

«  ... a balm for the soul. Champian sounds, always, like she's having the time of her life »
