CARTE BLANCHE TO MARTIN SALEMI

Martin Salemi was born in Brussels in 1988. His parents are both artists. His father, who plays the guitar, initiated him to music at a very early age. He started learning the piano aged six and, in 2013, completed his jazz piano master’s degree with distinction at the Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel.

Martin is interested in all types of music and in various piano styles and, in addition to jazz piano, he has had the opportunity to experience classical as well as salsa, funk, pop and rock music.

Very early on, in addition to his instrumental work, he developed an interest for composition. He started recording albums very young – first cassettes, then CDs – which he shared with family and friends.

Martin is currently involved in two personal projects. OPMOC, which has already recorded three albums and has toured internationally several times, and the Martin Salemi Trio, which released its first album in 2017 under the Igloo Records label.

ORCHESTRA ITALIANA BRUXELLES

INTERNATIONAL BIG BAND

Angelo Gregorio (arrangement, sax), Flavio Spampinato (vocals), Carla Piombino (vocals), Fanny Perche (sax), Elias Schiva (sax), Ashley Marques (clarinet), Rumen Hernandez (trumpet), Nico Sanchez (trumpet), Julien Gillaux (trombone), Fabrizio Pucci (trombone), Fil Caporali (bass), Lucas Vanderputten (drums), Julien Gillain (piano), Pierre Sutra (Cello), Dahud Le Muer (violin)

The Orchestra Italiana Bruxelles (OIB) is the Italian Jazz Big Band of Brussels founded in 2013 from the idea of Maestro Angelo Gregorio. The heart and core of OIB’s repertoire is the passion of the Maestro for this historical moment of the Italian Music that he calls the “Golden Era”. This period goes from 1930 until 1970 and represents one of the most productive moments for “Il Bel Paese” in terms of songs and beautiful melodies that will become well known all over the world. It’s about songs such as Nel blu dipinto di blu, Parole Parole, Buonasera Signorina, Estate, Voglio Vivere Cosi and many others.

Another significant aspect that makes their repertoire very interesting and in tune with the times is the fact that the Orchestra is composed not only of Italians but also of musicians of other nationalities such as French, Belgian, Portuguese, Cuban and Uruguayan. This multicultural environment enriches the entire OIB’s repertoire by introducing a new key that is poured into the solos of every single musician and again in the whole orchestra that through the music and the cultural differences of its performers succeeds in creating the union in diversity.

Playing the music of one of his hero is not an easy job, especially when this hero developed a super-personal and unique sound than no one was able to reach better than him. Thelonious Monk was a revolutionary composer, and pianist. He left us a large corpus of brillant and beautiful tunes, all of these are short stories full of surprises, dissonance, which can sound like a strange joke as well as a life celebration.  Théo Zipper uses his favorite 10 tunes of Monk as a playground for his quintet.
