Old Style New Orleans Music

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

The Mardi Gras Jazzband

The Mardi Gras Jazzband is since 1983 an established name in jazzclubs and festivals in Belgium and perhaps even more in the Netherlands.

"Old Style" has been the motto all the time, in which long forgotten songs and surprising themes prevail.

This shows that "New Orleans jazz" is so much more than the playing style of black musicians who visited our regions in the sixties and seventies.

Their favourite repertoire dates from the "Roaring Twenties".

The Mardi Gras Jazzband has been around for over 39 years and still hosts three founding members: of course "Papa" Paul Callebaut (leader, vocals and trombone), Wim "Dix" Decommer (piano) and Paul "Speedy" De Bock (bass).

We also have Michel Simons (trumpet), Jan "Magic" Coppieters (clarinet), Marnix De Boom (drums) and the Swedish banjo player Mattias "Fidgety" Hallin.

Tijn Trommelen is a man on a mission. Growing up in a family of (jazz) musicians, he immediately was certain of becoming one himself.

Starting off as a guitarist, he later on found another passion: singing. Inspired by the composers of the past, he is now also writing his own songs with the spirit of “The Great American Songbook” in mind.

His music is timeless, romantic, swinging and joyful. His playful and charismatic performance will make sure everybody will be taking part in his musical journey.

While bringing refreshing energy into the jazz scene, he is dreaming of making jazz pop music again.
Besides already working in the field as an (inter-) national jazz musician, he is also working on a lot of new music at this moment.

Jazz and cinema were born at the same time and have often had a close relationship.
Since "Jazz Singer", the first talking film, their paths have regularly crossed.
The O.S.T. Quartet revisits some of the great film music themes and adapts them, and uses them as a springboard for improvisation.
The four musicians take the listener on a game of tracks where images and Blue Notes meet.

triOrganico

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Osvaldo Hernandez Napoles (compositions, percussion ; string instruments),
Juan-Carlos Bonifaz (marimba), Patricia Hernandez (percussion)

Three multi-instrumentalists captivated by multifaceted sounds share their passion for Latin American traditions and musics.

Latin America has a surprisingly rich and diverse traditional musical culture, born of many cultural mixes. There are African rythms, string instruments from Europe as well as wind instruments and singing techniques from the native Indian populations. Here and there, TriOrganico reveals some natural or utilitarian elements, sometimes the most unexpected ones, which have transformed themselves through fascinating stories into musical instruments. Riddled with references to traditional rituals, the show of TriOrganico gives us compositions sometimes festive sometimes moving that invite us to travel evoking the variety of a colorful continent.

ROARING CATS

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Sam Ghezzi (vocals, sax), Mo van der Does (clarinet), Coos Zwagerman (trumpet),
Joan Codina (trombone), Oscar Ployart Wetche (piano), Davor Stehlik (banjo),
Tomek van Leeuwen (bass, sousaphone), Joe Crotch (drums)

"Roaring Cats is a swing/hot jazz band founded in Amsterdam in 2018 by Sam Ghezzi and Davor Stehlik. During these years the band, started as a quartet, developed into a small orchestra featuring the horn section Joan Codina, Mo van der Does and the piano player Oscar Ployart Wetche.

After several concerts in festivals, venues and arranging sessions, their repertoire grew into a set of original arrangements of 20’s\30’s compositions, melting different identities and musical ideas.

Through a philologically conscious approach, their sound reflects the development of the music born in New Orleans, symbol of a mixture of sounds from an abundance of cultures.

Within the boundaries of a musical language that feels distant in time but close to the most natural and spontaneous artistic expressions they took the challenge of giving value and new significance to the roots of jazz.

Combining the artistic and entertaining content, they are able to offer a unique way of performing which captures the interest of art seekers and jazz connoisseurs as well as a more inexperienced audience.

In order to succeed, they took the risk of limiting themselves to the style restrictions and parameters that eventually allowed them to experiment and create something new. By using this approach they can express musical ideas in the most diverse ways, coming up with different paths to investigate the beauty of simplicity."
