Bluesy Mary

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Crossroads Classical and Jazz

Marie Ghitta (viola), Julien Gillain (piano and violin), Pauline Leblond (trumpet and bugle), Fil Caporali (double bass)

"Bluesy Mary is a project at the crossroads of the classical and jazz worlds, with the particularity of using songs from the classical repertoire as a starting point. This fusion is made deep and subtle by the link between the playing of famous jazz musicians and the specificities of each classical piece. Thus, for example, Bill Evan's playing is linked to Massenet's "Méditation de Thaïs", Nat King Cole's ballads to Fauré's "Après un rêve". The aim is to make these two worlds accessible to everyone through sounds and themes that are part of the conscious and/or collective unconscious."

After his first album "Short Stories" which seduced us with its mix of syncopated grooves, luminous ballads and chiselled melodies, Martin Salemi is back with a new album. Refined, with a hushed atmosphere, its coherence of purpose and musical maturity confirms his talent in offering us timeless music, outside fashions and trends, a sincere music nourished by a great humility. With "About Time" (IGLOO Records), Martin Salemi and his trio succeed in creating a work that is at the same time dense, compact and airy, while letting the music breathe and never seeming to force it.

Anaphora Trio – Lexicon I (Album Release Tour) 8.30pm

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Followed by our Jazz Jam Session 9.30pm

Filippo Deorsola (piano), Jonathan Ho Chin Kiat (bass), Marco Luparia (drums, objects)

Anaphora is a musical organism focused on Improvisational research. Lines of tensions are built between a diagram of bodies which improvise themselves on their instruments. Production of sounds. Response. And the organism moves. It stretches or relaxes according to the bodily and acoustic impulses that structure it. It is in the communion of bodies made possible by Improvisation that a community of sound is created. Energies and gravities that say, “these bodies are breathing together”. And if Latin for breathing together is con-spirare, then of course, for Anaphora improvisation means, first and foremost, the possibility of a conspiracy.

Anaphora is supported in their research by SENA (NL) and by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Italy Music Export). They published their debut Album 'Lexicon I'  under the Auand Label, receiving positive reviews at home and abroad.

Tribute to Johnny Hodges

Wouter Van den Broeck (piano), Victor Foulon (double bass), Frédérik van den Berghe (drums), Antoine Lissoir (sax)

Cornelius "Johnny" Hodges (July 25, 1907 – May 11, 1970) was an American alto saxophonist, best known for solo work with Duke Ellington's big band. He played lead alto in the saxophone section for many years. Hodges is considered to be one of the definitive alto saxophone players of the big band era. He had a pure tone and economy of melody on both the blues and ballads that won him admiration from musicians of all eras and styles

His highly individualistic playing style, which featured the use of a wide vibrato and much sliding between slurred notes, was frequently imitated.

This will be the case again tonight, with the tribute of saxophonist Antoine Lissoir surrounded by the best rhythm section of the kingdom

Like a vintage Jukebox, in the heyday of the 45 singles, The Po' Boys offer you surprising discoveries. Without limits in their musical translations, the five members of the group have a blast playing Cha-cha-cha, Rhythm & Blues, Rock Steady and Jazz style, of course. A marriage of afro-american and european music, these musical styles are for them an inexhaustible source of wonder. Benjamin Clement on guitar, Antoine Lissoir on saxophones and clarinet, Timothé Le Maire on trombone, Max Malkomes on double bass, Laurent Vigneron on drums are "The Po' Boys".

After that, Vincent Penasse decided to travel to Brazil where he lived there from 1999 to 2010 in Salvador de Bahia. During his period in Brazil he had the opportunity to play in different Brazilian bands such as forro, bossa nova, samba and jazz bands. He played with multiple artists including: Lima Alves, Mou Brasil, Tati Lima, Arrocha o no, Roberval Santos and Horracio Barros Reis.

The style of the Araucaria band is a very particular style in which they mix popular music from Brazil such as samba and specifics rhythms from Bahia, while creating a jazz feeling and making room for improvisation.
