Boris Schmidt Band

Boris Schmidt (bass/compositions), Bruno van der Haegen (sax, clarinet),
Lorenzo Dimaio (guitar), Lionel Beuvens (drums)

Originally from Luxembourg but now based in Brussels, Belgium, this bassplayer who has been a sideman for many years, finally takes the time to present his own compositions in an acoustic jazz quartet setting. Enriched by his international experience with widely varied styles of music, he now makes his mark in a modern, melodic jazz style with nods to blues, baroque and of course the great american songbook and swing. Enter a world where each note is light, subtle and round. Wrapped in apparent nonchalance, great attention to detail and precision confer a feeling of harmony and calm strength to the experience. His first solo album “Now” was released december 2018 on belgian label Homerecords.

He is a talented writer, composer and performer, but also a multi-instrumentalist, director and producer. Cool School is his fifth studio album. The result is astonishing; his voice very close to that of Michael Franks and his unique ambiances that rocked our 70/80s with happiness. Between jazz, bossa nova, pop folk sophisticated, we enjoy listening to his standards of Michael Franks rearranged by Leo Sidran. A great success.

Maglé, this is this fleeting moment that sometimes lands on the world, such as a sleepy morning where the mist shows bits and pieces of the landscape. The balance between writing and improvisation nourishes a music that is both narrative and evocative. The aesthetic of Maglé results from multiple influences in jazz and classical music, but also from the choice of an original instrumentation, combining the alto flute and the trombone to a more classical rhythmic section.

Druss Lecomte & Band

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Tribute to Eroll Garner

Druss Lecomte (piano), Joe Maartense (bass),Thomas Petit (drums),
Lekan Fakeye (congas)

Druss lecomte gave his first concert at the age of seventeen in the club “l’Os à Moelle” in Brussels. It's been fifty-two years. He started with the blues and boogie style and then he came to the Jazz standard repertoire. He can play the ragtimes, the Stride piano of Fats Waller or that of James Pete Johnson. He loves Count Basie's swing playing or even playing like Oscar Peterson...but his favorite pianist is certainly Erroll Garner. I know, it's hard to believe, when you know that he twice played the first part of a Fats Domino concert in Namur and the first part of a Ray Charles concert in Liège... Druss is definitely a chameleon pianist!

Druss Lecomte recreated Erroll's quartet with Joe Maartense on bass, Thomas Petit on drums and Lekan Fakeye on congas. With his excellent musicians, he makes us relive the humorous arrangements of Erroll Garner...an often quirky right hand that must be brought back thanks to the sixteenth notes...a very swing but also sometimes very mambo left hand...and as he has including the playing of this great pianist, he makes us discover new pieces never before played in the style of Erroll Garner...

You are going to experience an excellent evening with the Druss Lecomte Jazz Quartet...

Constanza Guzman

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

 "New Album:  Melodías del Instante"

Constanza Guzmán (vocals, compositions),
Victor Da Costa (guitar, cavaquinho),
Tuur Florizoone (chromatic accordion, glockenspiel), Stephan Pougin (drums)

Constanza has an impressive voice which will give you goosebumps... She walks from the low to the high notes with an ease and a disconcerting naturalness.

Coming from a Chilean family, she takes her cultural origins and mixes them with various musical influences such as jazz or Brazilian music to offer a music that makes her truly unique on the current European scene.

In her new album "melodías del instante" which will be released in February 2022, she presents original compositions that have been arranged by the accordionist Tuur Florizoone, also a member of the group.

It is a particular universe where Constanza translates her search for a woman songwriter and her militant attachment to "beauty" with themes that are dear to her such as nature, exile, the invisible, or love.

On this album, she is surrounded by renowned  musicians such as Victor da Costa on guitar and cavaquinho and Stephan Pougin on percussion. Together and each one, with their own singular musical language, form a very lively quartet where improvisation and expression are put forward in an original way.

John Law

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Re-Creations

Sam Crockatt (sax), John Law (piano & keyboard), Henrik Jensen (bass),
Alex Goodyear (drums)

John Law (“One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists” International Piano Magazine, 2014) presents Re-Creations: creative arrangements of some of the world’s most familiar music.

The idea is simple: we take some of the best-known tunes from all genres - jazz, pop, indie, rock, folk, classical sometimes - and re-create them, finding new arrangements and new angles to present them.

Sometimes just spontaneously re-inventing them. But no matter how free and inventive we get, no matter how complex and intricate the arrangements become, audiences everywhere always feel part of the creative process, because they know the tune and recognise it when it comes back.

This is art music played, by highly skilled musicians, where audiences don’t feel excluded. They are an integral part of the evening and the whole experience.

The current new repertoire includes tunes by the Beatles, a baroque arrangement of Fly Me to The Moon, a raucous version of U Can’t Touch This, an arhythmic take on Smoke on the Water, a gorgeous re-working of Moon River and a gentle swinging journey through Debussy’s Claire de Lune…

The Ray Davies Songbook

Ben Crosland (bass), Bart Defort (sax), Victor Da Costa (guitar),
Jan De Haas (drums), Mathieu de Wit (piano)

Ray Davies is one of the finest songwriters in popular music history. Waterloo Sunset is a true classic and You Really Got Me sounds as fresh and edgy as the day it was recorded. Sunny Afternoon and Dedicated Follower Of Fashion have a natural swing and the groove of All Day And All Of The Night is irresistible. They are the perfect vehicles for jazz arrangement.

Ben Crosland is an English bass player/composer/arranger/bandleader. He works with the cream of UK jazz musicians. His arrangements of the Ray Davies Songbook have resulted in two critically acclaimed albums.

“the album swings consistently… with this sharp, cogent collection, a dedicated follower of Ray Davies has made him a well-respected jazz composer too.”
The Times

“I thought it was very good and well played. Your album is easy to listen to and I like the sound with the tenor and soprano sax. The improvisation is so good. Well done!”
Mick Avory, the Kinks

Tribute to Miles Davis

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Kind of Blue Tribute

Pierre Malempré (trumpet), Michel Mainil (sax), Thomas Champagne (sax),
Maxime Moyaerts (piano), Jean-Louis Rassinfosse (bass),
Bruno Castellucci (drums)

On August the 17th 1959, trumpeter Miles Davis published the album “Kind of Blue”. This recording is still considered as the most important work of Miles Davis.

Best-selling jazz album, first Jazz Gold Record, “Kind of Blue” is recognized as the most influential album of the whole jazz history.

As his usual, Miles had the sagacity to propose this album at the right moment. On one hand, a generation of musicians didn’t want to sideline tradition and, on the other hand, a group of vanguard creators tried to open new doors.

Miles Davis, supported by his peers, opened a new approach, the modal jazz. Forty years after his recording, this album is considered as a turning point in jazz history, a way of moving away from dense compositions, coming back to the melody …

The project of (re)presenting “Kind of Blue” was born out of the meeting and desire of 6 musicians to recreate in their way the essence of this legendary album. The pleasure of playing together music that didn’t lose his freshness and creativity.

ENJOY!

As soon as things were back on track, he called his go-to-guys for a try out and, guess what ? New project : GHS Acoustik Band featuring Oscar Georges

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Followed by our Jazz Jam Session

GHS is a Brussels based band created in 2018 around three musicians and friends who met in the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. The trio originated from Gilad Hekselman’s idea of a« bassless trio » , substituing the instrument with down octaving effects on the guitar and synthetising bass on

keyboard. The artistic direction of the band grew away from that first inspiration, as the influences of their teachers and mentors from the famous belgian trio Aka Moon took over, in deeply connected improvisations and rythmical games, tainted with jazz fusion sonorities.

The band recorded last year a first album which is about to get released, figuring compositions of every members, and a cover from Aka Moon. For this special occasion in the Music Village, GHS will be playing their compositions in a more standard setting, with Oscar Georges on double bass as a special guest.

Une Nuit – Great Trio

Laurent Doumont (sax), Vincent Bruyninckx (piano), Bart Denolf (bass)

The night has something magical for most of us. It is a time of love, dreams, hopes, fears, fun, secrets… But above that, it is the moment where poets, scientists and believers look at the sky seeking for understanding, faith or inspiration. Everyone in his own way looking for answers. The night also has always been a deep source of inspiration for musicians and songwriters through the years. « The night has a thousand eyes, If the stars were mine, All across the universe, Nessun Dorma… » Laurent Doumont and Vincent Bruyninckx - joined tonight by Bart Denolf - dig in this dreamy repertoire in prevision of their next project together, « Une Nuit », inspired by the book of Trin Xuan Thuan.

Diallo / Williams / Vanbuel

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

International Trio

Claude Diallo (piano), James Williams (drums), Martijn Vanbuel (bass)

Diallo / Williams / Vanbuel is a cooperative jazz piano trio with internationally acclaimed jazz pianist and composer Claude Diallo from Switzerland, American drummer James Williams who currently lives in Belgium and the native Martijn Vanbuel on bass. This trio is based on friendships that last over a decade.

Martijn Vanbuel and Claude Diallo met for the first time in Taipei, Taiwan, where Vanbuel used to live for many years before returning to Belgium. In 2007 Diallo made his first trip to Taiwan and between 2007 and 2012 the two musicians often played together in Taiwan.

James Williams and Claude Diallo had their first encounter in 2004 at Berklee College of Music when they both studied at the renowned music school. During that time Williams was drumming for Gary Burton and Diallo needed a new drummer for his trio. Soon thereafter they started touring in Switzerland, France and Germany and also had many live performances in the greater Boston area with the Claude Diallo Trio.

During the pandemic Diallo had a special project in which he reunited old friends to come together and play. In November 2021 this trio had its start in St. Gallen, Switzerland and now will be performing in Belgium for the first time. The music varies from traditional Jazz arrangements from the Hard-Bop area to original compositions of Vanbuel and Diallo. It's sound is very fresh but at the same time authentic. There is no leader and the music being played is the focus of the trio. The listener awaits a virtuoso live performance of internationally acclaimed musicians at the peak of their careers. Definitely a highlight not to be missed.

Tribute to Benny Goodman

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Peter Verhas (clarinet), René Harvengt (vibraphone),
Paul Bourdiaudhy (drums),
Stijn Wouters  (piano), Jean van Lint (bass)

Benny Goodman learned clarinet at his synagogue, bolstered by two years of classical training. He made his professional debut at 12 and became part of the rich Chicago jazz scene, steeped in the music of New Orleans. Goodman first recorded in 1926 and spent several years as a first-call musician in New York. His 1934 band was broadcast on the popular “Let’s Dance” radio show which aired coast to coast. An otherwise unsuccessful tour in 1935 ended in a smash hit in Los Angeles where the audience went wild. Thus, it is said, swing was born and Goodman became its name  King of Swing  !

As a composer Goodman contributed to ”Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Seven Come Eleven,” “Air Mail Special,” “Flying Home,” “Don’t Be That Way,” ”Lullaby in Rhythm,” “If Dreams Come True,” and “Soft Winds.”

Goodman also helped racial integration in America. In the early 1930s, black and white jazz musicians could not play together in most clubs or concerts. In the Southern states, racial segregation was enforced by law. Benny Goodman broke with tradition by hiring Teddy Wilson to play with him and drummer Gene Krupa in the Benny Goodman Trio. In 1936, he added Lionel Hampton on vibes to form the Benny Goodman Quartet.

Trio V.O 60s

Laurent Doumont (sax & vocals), Patrick Deltenre (guitar), Victor Foulon (bass)

Standards are the playground for this trio. Whether they are American, French or Italian doesn't matter, the criteria for inclusion in Trio VO's repertoire are the elegance of the melodies and harmonies, and their osmosis with the lyrics; all the things making a good song. From Serge Gainsbourg to Domenico Modugno or Henri Mancini, the influence of the 1960s is omnipresent, served with complicity by these three swing lovers. We are reminded of Sinatra, Chet Baker, Joe Pass or Stan Getz and we let ourselves carried away by the narrative of a music that is told as it is sung, listened to as it is danced, nostalgic yet happy.

New project : MOSAE

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels

Followed by our Jazz Jam Session

Mattia Romano (guitar), John de Martino (bass), Umberto (drums)

Mosae is a Jazz, Rock, Ambient trio born in 2017 in Maastricht (Netherlands) by three Italian musicians who met there for study. The music is a tribute to their friendship, to the music that flows naturally and to the river Meuse which flows through the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the city of Maastricht. Their main work is the “Mosae Suite”, a musical session consisting of several pieces dedicated to the river and the nature that surrounds it. The Mosae Suite aims to create a dream narrative around the banks of this river, whose landscapes and colors inspired the group in the compositional act. Despite the calmness brought by nature and the docile flow of river waters, reproduced in the more ambient sounds of the band, a contrast with a very rhythmic connotation makes room in the music, giving the overall sound also a certain solidity. The music is also permeated by sounds ranging from jazz, from which the musicians draw heavily in their stylistic approach, to progressive rock, a fundamental and never set aside part of the group's adolescent listening.

It has been proven that love & music can be an energizing combination.

So, next to writing their own music under the name of “Jane Spleen”, Oljana & Koen soon discovered that, next to their jobs as music teachers, most of all they wanted to play music, while discovering the world. Soon, they began to see that playing music could  take them wherever they wanted to go…

For the last 5 years, GetSomeWine performed concerts in more than 10 countries, inside and outside Europe. Inspired by those travels around the world, they started longing for their own soulful latin band, so they surrounded themselves with other musicians and started rehearsing…
