Hetty Kate Trio

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

"Treasures of The American Songbook"

Hetty Kate (Vocals), Maxime Moyaerts (Piano),
Victor Foulon (Double Bass)

"When Hetty Kate takes the stage you can’t help but notice. She  has a stage presence only matched by the clarity

of her voice – couple this with her dedication to music that swings,  and you have the jazz musician’s singer.” – James Morrison Multi-Instrumentalist (AU)

For these intimate concerts, British/Australian jazz vocalist Hetty Kate  has invited celebrated musicians, pianist Maxime Moyaerts and bassist Victor Foulon to join her. As the trio explores classics and curiosities from the swing, cool jazz and bop eras you'll discover the joys of the jazz trio, a simplicity allowing each musician, and importantly, each song to shine.

"Like Peggy Lee on a Vespa" Marc Myers, Jazzwax Magazine (USA)

Described as "the real deal" and "one of the best swing singers on the  scene today", jazz singer Hetty Kate has been pursuing an impressive international career for over a decade. From intimate clubs to the most prestigious stages such as The Sydney Opera House, Hetty's career has taken her all over the world, from New Zealand to New York.

With her clear voice and remarkable intonation, reminiscent of the singers of the 1950s, Hetty Kate swings the beautiful songs of the American Songbook - from Gershwin to Dameron, from swing to bop. You'll notice that Hetty "honors the composer" by staying true to the message and melody of his composition, and uses improvisation in a way that never interferes with the lyrics. It is this rare quality and a compelling ease on stage that has attracted the attention of musicians and audiences the world over.

Over the course of her career, Hetty has released ten critically acclaimed albums and performed at many festivals including the New York Winter Jazz Festival (USA), the Sapporo Jazz Festival (Japan), the Prague Proms (Czech Republic), the Melbourne, Sydney and Perth International Jazz Festivals (Australia), the Cavell Leitch International Jazz Festival (New Zealand), the

Peniscola Jazz Festival (Spain), the Piacenza Jazz Festival (Italy). Hetty also toured extensively with award-winning Australian jazz musician James Morrison for many years, notably as the featured vocalist  on his symphonic concert (Europe/Asia/Australia) entitled "The A to Z of Jazz".

Join us and enjoy a warm, entertaining and masterful evening of treasures from the American Songbook.

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

Joseph Nowell (piano), Michele Bondesan (double bass),
Giuseppe Sardina (drums)

Katharsis was born in 2020 from the meeting of three musicians and long-time friends who had been playing together for years in different contexts (BlueRing Improvisers among others) and decided to bring together their mutual influences in a stable formation. The trio aims to reconcile European jazz, contemporary textures and impromptu composition, creating fragile but intense music, instinctively controlled and made consistent by the deep contact between the musicians.

Spring 2024 marks the Italian/Belgian tour presenting their album "People and Places" (Aut Records 2022) consisting only of original pieces written specifically for this formation by the three musicians, which received positive reviews from Italian and international press.

After researching into the repertoire of the great Fred Hersch, Enrico Pieranunzi and Keith Jarrett, It became very important to try and put down on paper all the inspiration they provided. And this with all the precious help of his close circle. The music is characterized by the necessary use of silence and space to express the feelings of personal experiences.

Tribute to Benny Goodman

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

Peter Verhas (Clarinet), René Harvengt (Vibraphone),
Paul Bourdiaudhy (Drums), Stijn Wouters (piano),
Stefan Willems (Bass)

Benny Goodman learned clarinet at his synagogue, bolstered by two years of classical training. He made his professional debut at 12 and became part of the rich Chicago jazz scene, steeped in the music of New Orleans. Goodman first recorded in 1926 and spent several years as a first-call musician in New York. His 1934 band was broadcast on the popular “Let’s Dance” radio show which aired coast to coast. An otherwise unsuccessful tour in 1935 ended in a smash hit in Los Angeles where the audience went wild. Thus, it is said, swing was born and Goodman became its name  King of Swing  !

As a composer Goodman contributed to ”Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Seven Come Eleven,” “Air Mail Special,” “Flying Home,” “Don’t Be That Way,” ”Lullaby in Rhythm,” “If Dreams Come True,” and “Soft Winds.”

Goodman also helped racial integration in America. In the early 1930s, black and white jazz musicians could not play together in most clubs or concerts. In the Southern states, racial segregation was enforced by law. Benny Goodman broke with tradition by hiring Teddy Wilson to play with him and drummer Gene Krupa in the Benny Goodman Trio. In 1936, he added Lionel Hampton on vibes to form the Benny Goodman Quartet.

Sam Gerstmans, double bass
Umberto Odone, drums

Passionate about all aspects of the long tradition of jazz music, these four talented musicians will come together for an evening dedicated to the great composers who have shaped what we now call jazz. The quartet’s music will range from iconic standards to lesser-known gems from masters like Charles Mingus, Sam Rivers, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, proposing also some original compositions.

Piergiorgio Pirro is a Brussels-based pianist whose work is deeply rooted in jazz, yet draws inspiration from classical and Brazilian music. Known for his versatility and innovation, he recently published “fold/unfold/refold” (AUT Records), an album that bridges new sounds coming from the 20th Century classical tradition into jazz.

Nicolas Kummert, Belgian saxophone player and researcher, has always shown curiosity, versatility, and openness to all styles of music. Having an extensive recorded production, he played in more than 50 countries worldwide, and participated in projects that span from jazz to electronics to African music.

Sam Gertsmans, Belgian bass player from Liège, studied violin and trumpet before switching to bass at 17, quickly gaining attention and collaborating with various notable jazz musicians. His extensive collaborations and participation in major jazz festivals make him one of Belgium’s most relevant bass players.

Jacky terrasson

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

Jacky Terrasson (piano)
Géraud Portal (bass)
Lukmil Perez (drums)

Jacky Terrasson, the most widely travelled of all jazz pianists, is the “piano player of happiness”, according to Telerama magazine in France. He is an exhilarating musician, one of those who play their public straight to euphoria.

Exactly one year after his triumph in the Thelonius Monk competition, Jacky Terrasson was introduced in the New York Times Magazine as one of the 30 under 30, that is to say one of the 30 artists most likely to change American culture in the next 30 years, and signed with the prestigious Blue Note label.

He made three first trio recordings for Blue Note (Jacky Terrasson, Reach, and Alive). He then devoted himself to several collaborations: “Rendezvous”, with Cassandra Wilson, and “What it is”, with Michael Brecker and Mino Cinelu. Beginning in 2001, he records “A Paris” for Blue Note, a very personal interpretation of classics of French song; “Smile”, (winning him Best Jazz Album of the Year, 2003 Victoires du Jazz and a Gold Django), and finally a solo album, “Mirror”.

This Franco-American national has never stopped dazzling us, either by his prestigious collaborations, with greats such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Jimmy Scott, Charles Aznavour, Ry Cooder… or with his minimalist and energetic music hammered out with drummer Leon Parker and bassist Ugonna Okegwo, in a trio that was considered one of the best jazz trios of the 90s. And this intuition, this instinct, this openness, leads him to the discovery of the great burgeoning talents of his many groups (talents such as those of Eric Harland, Ben Williams, Jamire Williams, and Justin Faulkner).

In February 2012, Jacky Terrasson signed with Universal Jazz France. His first recording, “Gouache”, will appear in Fall 2012, and it is a joyous celebration of his 20-year career. In this recording, he is surrounded by the pride of the upcoming New York jazz generation, but also by Michel Portal, Stéphane Belmondo, Minino Garay, and singer Cecile McLorin-Salvant.

He performs regularly in solo and in trio in the great jazz festivals (Montreal, San Francisco, Montreux, North Sea Jazz, Marciac); and in the most prestigious Piano festivals (Klavier Ruhr Festival, Lucerne, La Roque d’Anthéron, Piano aux Jacobins). He also plays regularly in Asia, mostly in Japan, South Korea and in China, in Europe and the United States.

If we were to describe his playing, we would compare Jacky Terrasson to Bud Powell for his carefully controlled velocity on the piano keys, to Ahmad Jamal for his sense of phrasing, but also for his knowledge of the great French composers savants, such as Ravel, Fauré and Debussy. Through his fingers, as he mingles and melts the colors and the inventions of the great pianists of yesterday and today, Jacky creates his own style, all in subtleties, freshness, facility and ease, with the desire to rewrite and reinvent, again, every day and forever.

Septeto To’ Mezclao – Tradicional Cuban Music

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

Tomas Sotolongo Fuentes: Lead singer, guitar, direction.
Carlos Gomez: Tres Cubano, backing vocals.
Lazaro Hernandez: Bass, backing vocals.
Yusbel Remon Bravo: Congas.
Damian Alvarez Castro: Bongo, campana, cajón, backing vocals.
Nelson Garzón Delis: Singer, maracas y güiro.
Nicolás Sanchez: Trumpet and backing vocals.

TO' MEZCLAO TRADICIONAL appears to be a traditional music SEPTET consisting of: double bass, guitar, tres, congas, bongos, trumpet, percussions and voice. They perform the most famous genres of Cuban music: SON. But the lesser-known changüí, the nengón, the rumba, the bolero and the guaracha are also featured. This group of young people gives the Cuban SON back the freshness and authenticity that made this rhythm the favorite within the broad spectrum of dance rhythms on the island.

TO' MEZCLAO is a young group of talented Cuban musicians with a common goal: to save the classic and somewhat forgotten Cuban SON. As a Septet they bring this Caribbean music movement to life under the direction of Tomàs Sotolongo Fuentes.

SLR 5 (Sal La Rocca 5tet)

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

Phil Abraham (trombone), Steven Delannoye (tenor & soprano sax),
Igor Gehenot (piano), Sal La Rocca (double bass) & Umberto Odone (drums)

Sal La Rocca is a major bassist of the Belgian and European scene. He is the guardian of actual hard bop and post bop, solid and strong. He’s a protector of a mainstream jazz that knows how to reinvent itself, look forward and jostle with the ordinary while respecting fundamentals. Alongside his old accomplice Phil Abraham at the trombone, he’s gathered a new guard of spirited and talented jazz musicians. Nothing beats this ensemble in blowing up an already energetic music, and melodies full of sensitivity. On stage, the incandescent saxophonist Steven Delannoye responds to the attacks of pianist Igor Gehenot, while, behind his ‘barrels,’ Umberto Odone beats skins and cymbals. It’s incredible! Sal’s jazz is pleasure in its purest form: good mood that travels along the stage and spills into the audience. It’s a jazz slightly tainted by Latin or Caribbean choruses, but also a jazz full of demands (it remains a music born out of struggles) turned towards optimism. If you don’t like this kind of jazz, then you don’t like life. You’re welcome.
