John Law’s Re-Creations

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

The best-known melodies from everywhere

John Law, piano
Sam Crockatt, saxophones
Henrik Jensen, bass
Alex Goodyear, drums

New pieces inspired by some of the best-known melodies from everywhere! Jazz, rock, pop, classical…

John Law (“One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists” International Piano Magazine, 2014) presents Re-Creations: creative re-workings of some of the world’s most familiar music. Started in 2016, the idea is simple: we take some of the best-known tunes from all genres - jazz, pop, indie, rock, folk, classical sometimes - and re-create them, finding new arrangements and new angles to present them. Sometimes just spontaneously re-inventing them. But no matter how free and inventive we get, no matter how complex and intricate the arrangements become, audiences everywhere always feel part of the creative process, because they know the tune and recognise it when it comes back. This is creative jazz which does not exclude audiences; the listeners are an integral part of the whole experience. The current repertoire, with tunes from the recent album Many Moons (33JAZZ296), includes a deep groove House Of The Rising Sun, a mad version of Mama Mia mashed together with Pachelbel’s Canon, Eye Of The Tiger in 15(!), an arhythmic take on Smoke on the Water and a gorgeous re-interpretation of Ravel’s Pavane…

“Striking arrangements and great skill and invention in the solos... I can’t remember a better jazz gig! Breathtaking!”

“Only in Re-Creations could Debussy be followed by Deep Purple! One of the best jazz performances I have ever seen!”

Frédéric Chaine Quartet feat Florin Niculescu (Jazz violin star)

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

Gypsy Jazz

Violin : Florin Niculescu
Violin Frédéric Chaine
Guitar : Rafael Gouirand
Guitar : Frédéric Guédon
Double bass : Vilmos Csikos

Frédéric Chaine has invited for this concert the jazz violin star Florin Niculescu. Surrounded by exceptional jazz musicians they will perform this evening a repertoire of standards and compositions in tribute to the legendary “Quintet of the Hot Club of France” formed by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli.

Florin Niculescu has developed his own unique sound and language, thanks to his solid classical training, but also with the experience of its many musical collaborations alongside the

greatest musicians. His impeccable violin technique and phenomenal virtuosity admired by all musicians and auditors, are never an end in itself, but the means to express his musical personality. Similarly, the obvious spiritual filiation with his idol Stéphane Grappelli (1908-1997) is in no way a limitation on his own expression, but rather a goad that drives him to innovation. One of the few European artists who performed at Carnegie Hall.

Invited in 2007 to a tribute to the great pianist Oscar Peterson (who called Florin "the Carpathian Hurricane" after hearing him play) he shared the stage with icons of the jazz world : Hank Jones, Billy Taylor, Wynton Marsalis, Russell Malone, Christian McBride, Paquito D’Rivera, Mulgrew Miller, Lewis Nash, Houston Person, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath etc..

Mikael Godée – Eve Beuvens Quartet

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

Their fourth album « Ingen Fara Live »

Mikael Godée (sax), Eve Beuvens (piano),
Magnus Bergstroem (bass), Johan Birgenius (drums)

The Swedish saxophone player Mikael Godée and the Belgian piano player Eve Beuvens needed only a flyer and few clics on Myspace to meet each other fifteen years ago. From the start the two musicians found a very natural complicity. Soon joined by Magnus Bergström on bass and Johan Birgenius on drums they created this quartet.

As equal bandleaders, Eve and Mikael both compose for the group; their pieces form a surprisingly consistent whole. The four musicians are bound by a strong mutual trust, the risks they take do not impair the natural flow of the music. They release their fourth album ‘Ingen Fara Live’ (digital).

Jean-Paul Estievenart - trumpet
Wajdi Riahi - piano

The quartet returns to the Music Village and will present the music from their new record “In the land of…” which is Robert’s 20th release as a leader. The inspiration for the compositions which are filled with strong melodies and colorful harmony comes from various images of places, people, emotions, stories and relationships. The quartet creates a sound that flows through desire, minimalism and impressionism but at the same time keeps the love for jazz and doesn’t compromise the curiosity and the need of staying on the edge.

Erroll Garner Legacy

Druss Lecomte (piano)
Odimba Ghenda (congas)
Thomas Petit (drums)
Jo Maartense (bass)

Druss discovers the extraordinary Erroll Garner and his incredible playing full of humor in swing or mambo as in ballads... By listening to him, Druss understands and learns the technique of this great self-taught pianist...: a purely rhythmic left hand and a right hand which plays the themes while having fun pretending to drag to better catch up with the melody...

Druss will have the chance to go see him at the "Palais des Beaux-Arts" in Brussels...Druss is 19 years old at that time and dreams of creating a quartet like his Master... In 2010, he created his first trio in homage to Erroll Garner... Finally, for five years, Druss's dream has come true with the "Druss Lecomte Jazz Quartet" thanks to the excellent Thomas Petit on drums, Jo Maartense on double bass and Odimba Ghenda on congas who brings an African color to this quartet. This project, which is the legacy of Erroll Garner, is Druss' most beautiful project…

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

The legendary band SEA, SEX & SUN, formed in the 80s and 90s by Christophe Vervoort and Vincent Mardens, has seen many musicians from their generation, such as François Garny, Mimi Verderame, Benoît Vanderstraeten, Philippe Mobers, and many others. On the program: a delicious blend of jazz-rock, soul, funk, and Brazilian rhythms, reimagined with the same energy and joy of playing that has remained intact after all these years.

Tonight, the lineup will feature the original band:
- Christophe Vervoort, piano, composition
- Vincent Mardens, saxophones (alto, tenor, soprano)

JEAN-LUC PAPPI QUARTET INVITES DUNJA

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels, Belgium

TRIBUTE TO TOM JOBIM

Dunja (vocals), Jean-Luc Pappi (piano), Vincent Brijs (tenor sax), Chris Mentens (bass),
Bruno Castellucci (drums)

This great Brazilian composer is brought to life by Dunja's enchanting, characterful voice and four virtuoso, passionate musicians...

An evening full of joy and nostalgia that speaks of Love...

Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927, Rio - 1994, New York), a Brazilian musician, composer and singer, is the father of bossa nova, which means “new way”, a new way of singing and playing, and which he made known throughout the world thanks in particular to singer Astrud Gilberto and saxophonist Stan Getz.  Jobim was strongly influenced by the new American jazz movement of the 50s, known as bebop, whose harmonies he used (Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie...), and by Chopin, for his melodic and harmonic style. And all to a danceable rhythm reminiscent of Rio carnival (samba) and the sensuality of beautiful Brazilian beaches...
