Soledad Kalza and Sina Kienou
The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, BrusselsSoledad Kalza and Sina Kienou are a duo rich in the roots of their peoples and respectively anchored in strong traditions such as gypsy music and jazz for the former and Mandingo music, rock and improvisation for the latter. Their meeting in 2019 seals the joy of great unions.
Their paths festoon the archipelagos from East to West, from the Caribbean to the cotton fields of the far North, from the beaten peasantry to the tunes of the rhythm of the seasons, from Mandingo scales to the blues of the Sahel.
The grandson of Baba Abdoulaye Kienou, Chief of the Griots of Burkina Faso, Sina is also, alongside Soledad, his partner and wife, the ambassador of a universal language whose origins can be traced back to the Mande.

THOMAS GRIMMONPREZ TRIO «INDIGO» + Jazz Jam Session
The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, BrusselsWajdi Riahi (piano), Victor foulon (bass), Thomas grimmonprez (drums & compositions)
After "Big Wheel", I'm continuing on my path as drummer-leader in the form of a trio.
Wishing to reveal a new facet of my sound identity, I have created a repertoire based on the color indigo. At first glance, the color blue tinges with violet, but it's also a denomination for sensitive, creative people.
Driven by these two ideas, I've composed sound canvases within which I invite the listener to travel.
This new project takes off thanks to the talent of musicians, free of any aesthetic dogmatism, who have agreed to put their talent at the service of my compositions.
Particularly attached to sharing emotions with the public,
This new line-up develops a singular sound identity.

We performed in duo and then in trio accompanied by the super talented (and true «killer») Victor Da Costa, probably one of the best guitarists (Brazilian but Brussels adoption) of his generation!
In our formula in 4tet, we of course rolled out the red carpet to Jan De Haas, my lifelong companion (he was there at my first concert in the Travers when he came back from Berklee in… 1985, do the count). We can really speak here of friendship and sharing, in all the styles of music that jazz in the broad sense of the term offers us as a space of freedom.

The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, BrusselsEmiliano Sampaio (Guitar/Trombone), Luis Oliveira (Drums), Gustavo Boni (Bass)
Meretrio is a rare example of a real band! It is active since 2004 and fascinates by its continuous search for new musical paths, having already released eight very distinct albums that explore the musical connection between these three Brazilian musicians.
The most recent Meretrio album is “Live at the Birds Eye”, which features the saxophonist Heinrich von Kalnein and was recorded live at the famous Swiss “Birds Eye”. The trio will be on tour in Europe in Autumn and is preparing a new program to be released in 2024 to celebrate Meretrio´s 20 years anniversary.
In 2016 the Meretrio released “Óbvio” and received a four-star review from Downbeat Magazine and in 2019 the trio released two albums: "Passagem" featuring Heinrich von Kalnein on saxophone and flute, and the double album "Music for Small and Large Ensembles”.
The latest albums received great reviews and were named "Best Albums of the Year 2017" by Downbeat Magazine. Recently in 2021, Meretrio released a new album entirely dedicated to Brazilian music and focused on the genre “Choro”, a style that originated in Brazil in the 19th century and can be considered the first urban music in Brazil. This record was also nominated for the deutschen Schallplattenkritik and received great reviews from the media.

In 2015 Meretrio and Heinrich von Kalnein met in Europe for the first time. Saxophonist and flutist Heinrich von Kalnein is one of the great names of the European scene. In addition to being a renowned instrumentalist, Heinrich was co-leader of the acclaimed JBBG - Jazz Bigband Graz and is a professor at the University of Graz, which was the first jazz university in Europe.
In 2016 Heinrich was featured in two tracks of the first Meretrio album recorded in Europe “Obvio”. The album got four stars from Downbeat magazine and entered the list of best albums of the year.
It was a natural process until the quartet was formed in 2019 and released their first CD and LP entitled “Passagem”. The album was live recorded at the famous Bauer Studios, where so many classics in the history of jazz came from. For the record, the quartet wrote only original compositions that move between different styles of jazz, going through environments that resemble Brazilian music, ECM and folk music from different traditions.
In 2022, the quartet took their music to Australia for the first time, where they played at the country's biggest festivals such as the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Perth International Jazz Festival, and offered workshops at the renowned Monash University.
Now in 2023, the quartet will release their second album recorded live at the famous Swiss club “Birds Eye”. The album will feature authorial compositions that travel through Brazilian rhythms and jazz with lightness and explore the beauty of a quartet that mixes different cultures and generations! An ensemble which promises to thrill the listeners.

Katharsis « People and Places » release tour + Matteo Calabrese + Jazz Jam Session
The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, BrusselsJoseph Nowell (piano), Michele Bondesan (double bass),
Giuseppe Sardina (drums), Guest: Matteo Calabrese (alto saxophone)
Katharsis was born in 2020 from the meeting of three musicians and long-time friends who had been playing together for years in different contexts (BlueRing Improvisers among others) and decided to bring together their mutual influences in a stable formation. The trio aims to reconcile European jazz, contemporary textures and impromptu composition, creating fragile but intense music, instinctively controlled and made consistent by the deep contact between the musicians.
November 2023 marks the Italian/Belgian release tour of their album "People and Places" (Aut Records 2022) consisting only of original pieces written specifically for this formation by the three musicians, which received positive reviews from Italian and international press. The trio will invite saxophonist Matteo Calabrese, an Italian saxophonist based in Holland and close friend and colleague of the trio.

GHS Acoustik Band featuring Oscar Georges + Jazz Jam Session
The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, Brussels
GHS is a Brussels based band created in 2018 around three musicians and friends who met in the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
The trio originated from Gilad Hekselman’s idea of a « bassless trio » , substituing the instrument with down octaving effects on the guitar and synthetising bass on keyboard.
The artistic direction of the band grew away from that first inspiration, as the influences of their teachers and mentors from the famous belgian trio Aka Moon took over, in deeply connected improvisations and rythmical games, tainted with jazz fusion sonorities.
The band recorded last year a first album which is about to get released, figuring compositions of every members, and a cover from Aka Moon.
For this special occasion in the Music Village, GHS will be playing their compositions in a more standard setting, with Oscar Georges on double bass as a special guest.

Carte blanche to Sal La Rocca – The Treasures of Jazz
The Music Village Rue des Pierres 50 Steenstraat, BrusselsSal La Rocca Invit Bart Defoort & Friends
Bart Defoort (t.sax), Ron van Rossum (piano), Sal La Rocca (double bass),
Umberto Odone (drums)
The Bruges saxophonist Bart Defoort brings class experienced musicians to a well-filled Jazz attic for a great concert. Bart Defoort has been a permanent member of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra for a long time and rarely makes his own records, but he is even better live and especially in small venues.
They play a series of compelling compositions with tempo accelerations that are rooted in jazz history but sound fresh at the same time. They play some lesser-known classics by Duke Ellington (Blues in blue print) or a swinging 'House party starting' by Herbie Nichols from the Blue Note period that is reminiscent of Elmo Hope and Bud Powell. There is also a ballad, such as 'total eclipse' by vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson.
Of course Bart also plays his own work, such as 'with you it is' (fast hard bop with tempo changes and heavy drumming).
